  • Bevin, Founder / Instructor

    During her time in NYC, Bevin worked as a cycling instructor, talent trainer, and played a key role in the success of the digital media brand "Be My Neighbor." She also took on the role of a Lululemon brand ambassador and motivational speaker.

    With the onset of the pandemic, Bevin decided to return to Wrightsville Beach and launch Recess in 2020, bringing her enthusiasm for community, fitness, and wellness to the place she has always considered home.

    Bevin’s dynamic music selection (spanning everything from Rage Against the Machine, to Daft Punk, to Taylor Swift), intertwined with her attention to detail, empowering coaching style, and infectious passion for movement that is fun and that feels good creates a unique and one of a kind experience on the bike.

Hailing from Ocean Grove, NJ, her upbringing unfolded in Wilmington, and eventually brought her to New York City to pursue a career in ballet. Upon returning home to Wrightsville Beach, she met Bevin while working at a coffee shop… and the rest is history.

    Outside of Recess, Em has a passion for live music, long naps, great food, movement that feels good, and spending time with Bennie, her four-legged partner in crime - who embodies a punk rock spirit and is a constant reminder that life is best lived with a bit of chaos and a lot of love.

  • Carolyn, Lead Instructor

    @royceasana

    Originally from Richmond, VA, Carolyn’s deep roots in the water and history as a Division 1 swimmer led her to Corolla, NC where she worked and competed as an Ocean Rescue Lifeguard. Once she moved to the coast, (now with her husband and two amazing RAD boys), she never looked back. She also serves the Wilmington community as a real estate agent and yoga teacher.

    Carolyn uses her almost 12 years of experience guiding movement to create a safe and playful space for students to show up and connect deeply in mind and body. Carolyn believes movement is medicine and with the right fusion of music, breath, effort, ease, a sense of humor (and a healthy dose of pushes), anything is possible. Community is collaboration, her playlists are often a marriage of personal taste and rider request, creating a delicious eclectic cocktail to sip and savor. It should be joyful, or not at all. When in doubt, let the music move you.

  • Curtis, Instructor

    @curtisjtyler

    When not at the studio, you can find Curtis with a cold brew in hand, sitting ocean-side, thinking about his next travel adventure…and more than likely at lululemon. Curtis’ loved ones mean the world to him, and he values genuine connection and community.

    Curtis’ love for cycling came from a stint in Sweden and carried over to his time in Nashville, where he taught for over a year. Curtis’ mission is to create and make space for love and grace so that others can discover their true worth. At Recess, he loves to curate playlists with current hits with a twist of millennial nostalgia. The hope is that when you leave his class, you feel like you just left the most fun hangout with your closest friends. Some of his favorites to teach to are Taylor Swift, ILLENIUM, Fall Out Boy, Post Malone and Ellie Goulding.

  • Sara, Instructor

    @sara.i.leonard

    Born in Virginia and raised in Eastern North Carolina, Sara has always felt connected to the NC coast. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, she spent three years in the Virginia mountains before moving to Wilmington with her husband and their two pups, Pancake and Blanton. Sara’s love for movement began early with tennis, soccer, and ocean swims, and later grew into a passion for running. After college, she became a barre instructor and eventually founded a wellness and wedding business in ILM.

    These days you can find her on the Loop, behind the scenes at lululemon, or at Benny’s with a spritz and Margherita pizza.

    At Recess, Sara believes in tapping into unlocked potential, together. The choice to clip-in is an act of self-love and trust, and we can go further as a community when we show up with vulnerability and grace. You’re sure to hear Florence + The Machine, Noah Kahan, Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Taylor Swift, and any 90s rock band found on the CDs in her family’s 1997 Jeep.

  • Kendal, Instructor

    @spinswithken

    From the sea to the mountains and back again. Kendal grew up in Cape Coral, Florida, before moving with her family to a small town outside Boone, North Carolina, where she lived on her grandparents' plant nursery. For college, she returned to the coast at UNCW. Now, she works with children, teens, and young adults in the mental health field. Combining movement, music, and mental health led her to the cycling studio—an environment she quickly couldn’t live without.

    Kendal grew up on music inspired by her parents, with household staples like Elvis Presley, Garth Brooks, and Bon Jovi. Today, she listens to a wide range of genres, favoring indie, alternative, and nostalgic 90s/2000s throwbacks. She believes music and movement are powerful tools for mental health, creating a beautiful journey when combined.

    Outside the studio, Kendal loves exploring the outdoors—camping, walking nature trails with her dogs, Fin and Honey, or being on the water. She enjoys thrifting, playing guitar, and discovering hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

    Kendal’s goal is for you to leave her class feeling inspired, empowered, and capable of anything you set your mind to.

  • Sophie, Instructor

    Bio coming soon!

  • Kate, Instructor

    @kateclarkcycle

    Originally from Akron, Ohio, Kate is a lifelong athlete and musician who left law school behind to pursue a full time career in the fitness industry. After her collegiate softball career at Robert Morris University ended in injury, Kate was left searching for what life would look like post-athletics. Once she realized that movement did not in fact have to be tied to sports, she dedicated her career to coaching. Kate now works full-time in Wilmington as a personal trainer and group fitness coach, though her true love will always lie in the studio with the lights down and the music up. When not at Recess, you can find her with her wife, Ashton, traveling, reading, or getting her butt kicked in Scrabble (daily).

    As an openly queer woman, Kate's mission is to help others find their true and authentic selves both on and off the bike. In her classes, she seeks to create a unique experience in which riders are invited to let go of their self-imposed limitations and explore freedom where movement and music overlap.

  • Dana, Instructor

    Dana’s solar powered energy drives her to create a class that is intentional and fulfilling. Whether you are there to rage, rock, dance or play, she is right there with you! In class, you’ll find her whipping her ponytail to No Doubt and beaming with a radiant smile to Britney Spears. Her other staple artists include, Miley Cyrus, Skrillex, ABBA, Timbaland, Ke$ha, Nelly Furtado, Lady Gaga and many more.

  • Liza, Instructor

    @lizamsaunders

    Liza is a native New Yorker who learned from her grandma Tony that there’s no better place than the beach. Growing up with little tastes of ocean air, she always knew she’d one day live by the water.

    She spent her high school and college years in Virginia, attending school in the mountains where she fell in love with hiking and camping. Later, on a whim, Liza and her fiancé Reid sold nearly everything, packed up their dog Ryder and cat Jax, and moved to West Palm Beach, Florida.

    Though beautiful, Liza missed connection and community. One day she saw a cycling class on TikTok, gave it a try, and instantly fell in love—it was a total mindset shift.

    In 2023, Liza and Reid made another move, this time to Wilmington, NC—trading one beach for another. Once again in a new city, she sought community and found it at Recess after clipping in on a random Tuesday. When she’s not walking the loop, grabbing coffee, or riding at Recess, Liza works as the Director of Marketing at UNCW.

    Recess quickly became her home away from home. Liza believes movement should be joyful, empowering, and just the right amount of challenging. Whether it’s your first class or your 100th, she’ll be there to guide, encourage, and cheer you on!
